What do YOU want to learn about today? When was the last time a teacher asked you that question? Well, I'm asking it and I CANNOT wait to hear the answers!
Too often, in today's fast-past, data-driven world of education, students are told what and how to learn. Teachers wonder why students lack independence and ownership of their learning. They wonder why students appear disengaged with the learning process. Could the answer to these musings lie in giving students the OPPORTUNITY to learn about something that interests them, to research something about which they are passionate, to set an unrealistic goal only to determine that what they learn about themselves in the process is more valuable than the original endeavor? Genius Hour provides students with TIME to do all these things. For one hour a week, students pursue a passion-project. Students can: build a robot that makes scrambled eggs, compose a symphony, develop an on-line business, sell creations to support a worthy cause, learn how to run a 10K, implement a Bully-Free program for school, restore a car engine, invent a Nacho Fork. Teachers of Genius Hour students report a transference of student engagement to nearly all subject areas because when students are provided TIME and OPPORTUNITY to become intrinsically involved in the learning process, students develop critical thinking skills, time management skills, inquiry skills, and life skills that transcend the four walls of any classroom.
Wherever a student's passion leads, GENIUS follows!
