On Thursday, March 6, English 12 and AP Literature students attended a Gatsby-inspired celebration in Room 100. Students received invitations to the extravaganza requiring them to come dressed in their finest 1920's attire. Extra credit was offered to students who dressed as characters from Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. All party-goers had responsibilities. Prior to the celebration, students were divided into groups. Each group of students prepared one of the following presentations:
- Music of the 1920’s Your group has five minutes to tell us everything you possibly can about the music of the 1920’s. Tell us about the artists, the trends, the challenges, and the successes of the music of the Roaring 20’s. Create a soundtrack (at least 10 songs) for our Gatsby party. Tell us about the songs and the artists you’ve chosen. Each person in the group needs to present information to the class.
- Food and DrinkYour group has five minutes to tell us everything you possibly can about the food and drink of the 1920’s. Tell us about the types of celebrations people took part in and how Prohibition affected celebrations. Members of your group will plan the menu and make food and (non-alcoholic) drinks for the Gatsby party. Each person in the group needs to present information to the class.
- Fun and Games Your group has five minutes to tell us everything you possibly can about the games, sports, and dances that defined the Roaring 20’s. Members of this group will lead the class in games/dances during the Gatsby party. Each person in the group needs to present information to the class.
- Art and CultureYour group has five minutes to tell us everything you can about the art and cultural movements of the 1920’s. Members of this group will replicate pieces of art and writing to bring to the Gatsby party. Each person in the group needs to present information to the class.
AP Literature students who were assigned the topic of "Fun and Games" demonstrated one of the most popular dances of the 1920's called "The Charleston." Not only did they demonstrate the dance for their classmates, they also taught the class "the moves." What a celebration!
